Information Collection and Use
1. Information You Provide Directly
When you use FairShare, you may provide:
- Receipt Images: Photos of receipts you scan using the App's camera
- Receipt Data: Parsed receipt information including items, prices, totals, merchant names, and dates
- Contact Information: Names, phone numbers, or email addresses of friends you add to split bills with (if you use the contacts feature)
- Payment Information: Payment links or identifiers for third-party payment services (e.g., Venmo usernames, PayPal links)
- Custom Data: Any notes, tags, or custom information you add to receipts
2. Automatically Collected Information
- Device Information: Device model, operating system version, unique device identifiers
- Usage Information: How you interact with the App, features used, and general usage patterns (collected anonymously)
- Technical Data: App version, crash reports (if you opt in), performance metrics
3. Information We Do NOT Collect
We do not collect:
- Credit card numbers or banking information
- Social Security numbers or government IDs
- Precise geolocation data
- Personal identifiable information beyond what you explicitly provide
How We Use Your Information
We use your information to:
Primary Functions
- Provide Core Services: Process receipts using OCR, calculate splits, generate payment links
- Store Your Data: Save your receipts and splits locally on your device and optionally in your private iCloud storage
- Sync Across Devices: If you enable cloud sync, synchronize your data across your devices using Apple CloudKit
- Manage Subscriptions: Track your subscription status and entitlements through RevenueCat
Improvements and Support
- Improve the App: Analyze usage patterns (anonymously) to improve features and user experience
- Fix Issues: Diagnose and fix technical problems and bugs
- Customer Support: Respond to your inquiries and support requests

- Comply with applicable laws and regulations
- Protect our legal rights and prevent misuse
Data Storage and Processing
Local Storage
By default, all your data is stored locally on your device. This includes:
- Receipt images
- OCR-extracted data
- Friend contacts and payment information
- Split calculations and history
We do not have access to data stored locally on your device.
Cloud Storage (Optional)
If you enable cloud sync, your data is stored in your private Apple CloudKit database. This means:
- Data is encrypted and stored in Apple's iCloud infrastructure
- Only you can access this data through your Apple ID
- We cannot access, view, or retrieve your CloudKit data
- Data is governed by Apple's iCloud Terms and Privacy Policy
- You can disable cloud sync at any time in the App settings
On-Device Processing
All OCR (Optical Character Recognition) and receipt processing happens entirely on your device. Receipt images are not uploaded to our servers for processing.
Third-Party Services
FairShare integrates with several third-party services. Each service has its own privacy policy:
Apple CloudKit
- Purpose: Cloud storage and synchronization (optional)
- Data Stored: Your receipts, splits, and app data in your private CloudKit database
- Privacy: Governed by Apple's Privacy Policy
- Your Control: You can disable cloud sync in Settings
RevenueCat
- Purpose: Subscription and in-app purchase management
- Data Shared: Anonymous user ID, subscription status, purchase receipts
- Privacy Policy: RevenueCat Privacy Policy
- Note: RevenueCat does not receive your receipt images or split data
Apple App Store
- Purpose: Process in-app purchases and subscriptions
- Data Shared: Apple ID, purchase information
- Privacy: Governed by Apple's Privacy Policy
Payment Services (Venmo, PayPal, Zelle, etc.)
- Purpose: Generate payment request links
- How It Works: The App generates standard payment links (URLs) that open these services
- Data Shared: Only the information you include in the payment link (amount, note)
- Important: We do not process payments or have access to your payment accounts
- Privacy: Each service has its own privacy policy
Data Sharing and Disclosure
We Do Not Sell Your Data
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties for marketing purposes.
Limited Sharing
We may share information only in these limited circumstances:
- With Your Consent: When you explicitly choose to share receipts or payment links with friends
- Service Providers: With trusted third-party services listed above that help us operate the App
- Legal Requirements: When required by law, court order, or governmental authority
- Protection of Rights: To protect our rights, property, safety, or that of our users
- Business Transfers: In connection with a merger, sale, or acquisition (users will be notified)
Anonymous Analytics
We may share aggregated, anonymized usage statistics that cannot identify you individually.
Your Data Sharing Actions
When you use FairShare to share information with friends or payment services:
- You control what information is shared and with whom
- Shared payment links may be visible to recipients
- We are not responsible for how recipients use shared information
- Be mindful when sharing receipts that may contain sensitive information
Data Security
We take reasonable measures to protect your information:
- On-Device Encryption: Data stored on your device is protected by iOS security features
- CloudKit Encryption: Data synced to iCloud is encrypted in transit and at rest
- Secure Transmission: All network communications use HTTPS/TLS encryption
- Access Controls: Strict access controls limit who can access our systems
However, no method of transmission or storage is 100% secure. While we strive to protect your information, we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Data Retention
Local Data
- Data stored on your device remains until you delete it or uninstall the App
- You can delete individual receipts or clear all data in Settings
Cloud Data
- CloudKit data persists in your iCloud account according to Apple's policies
- You can delete cloud data through the App or your iCloud settings
Subscription Data
- RevenueCat retains subscription information as long as needed for billing and support
- Anonymous usage analytics are retained indefinitely
Your Privacy Rights
You have the following rights regarding your data:
Access and Portability
- Access all your data stored in the App at any time
- Export your receipts and data in CSV format
Correction and Deletion
- Edit or correct any information in the App
- Delete individual receipts or all your data
- Request account deletion by contacting us
Control Over Sync
- Enable or disable cloud synchronization at any time
- Choose to keep data only on your device
Contacts Permission
- Revoke contacts access in iOS Settings at any time
- The App will still function without contact access
Marketing Communications
- We do not send marketing emails unless you opt in
- You can unsubscribe from any emails at any time
Children's Privacy
FairShare is not intended for children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us, and we will delete such information.
California Privacy Rights (CCPA)
If you are a California resident, you have additional rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA):
